Marathon, Florida Keys

Snappers and Mahi biting good off Marathon

Fishing has been excellent around Marathon this past week, with impressive catches of mutton, mangrove, and yellowtail snapper arriving at the docks throughout the Middle Florida Keys.

Charter boats targeting the reefs on half-day fishing trips have found plenty of hungry snapper. Nice grouper are also being caught along the reef, giving anglers a great variety of species without having to travel far offshore.

Excellent Snapper Fishing on the Marathon Reefs

The reef bite has been steady, with several popular snapper species providing consistent action:

  • Mutton snapper
  • Mangrove snapper
  • Yellowtail snapper

This productive bite makes reef fishing a great option for families, beginners, and experienced anglers looking to enjoy plenty of action during a half-day Marathon fishing charter.

Quality grouper have also been mixed in with the snapper catches, adding even more excitement to the reef trips.

Mahi Biting Offshore

Nice mahi-mahi have been showing up offshore in depths of approximately 500 to 700 feet, with some very impressive fish mixed into the schools.

When searching for mahi, keep an eye out for:

  • Diving or circling birds
  • Floating debris
  • Weed lines
  • Current edges
  • Changes in water color

These signs often indicate baitfish and can lead you directly to feeding mahi.

The offshore action has remained productive for the past few weeks whenever weather and sea conditions have allowed boats to make the trip into the blue water.

Blackfin Tuna Adding to the Bluewater Action

Blackfin tuna have also been mixing in with the offshore catches.

With both mahi and blackfin tuna available, the bluewater fishing off Marathon is well worth targeting. These fast, powerful fish can provide some of the most exciting action available in the Florida Keys.
