Tarpon Fishing

Go Toe-to-Toe With the Silver King

The tarpon is one of the most explosive game fish that swims — a silver-scaled powerhouse that strikes hard, runs fast, and launches clear out of the water. We chase them through the bridges, channels, and backcountry flats around Marathon.

Tarpon fishing is a sight-and-ambush game. Your captain positions the boat around moving water where tarpon roll and feed, and puts live bait right in their path. When a silver king eats, the strike is violent and the first jump comes almost instantly.

These are big, powerful fish — adults commonly run 60 to well over 200 pounds — and nearly every tarpon is released to keep the fishery strong. We keep them in the water, grab a quick photo boatside, and send them back.

How We Fish

Techniques & Timing

There’s more than one way to hook a silver king. Your captain reads the water and the tide, then sets up the approach that fits the day.

Live Bait

Our go-to approach. We fish mullet, crabs, and threadfin herring on the tide, right where tarpon stage and feed.

Sight Casting

On calm days we work the flats, spotting rolling and laid-up fish and casting a bait directly into their path.

Fly Fishing

For anglers chasing the ultimate challenge, a tarpon on the fly is one of the great achievements in the sport.

Bridges & Channels

Moving water around the bridges funnels bait and tarpon together — prime ambush territory, especially on the tide change.

When to Go Tarpon are around the Keys much of the year, but the spring-into-summer run — roughly March through July — is the peak, when the biggest fish move through in numbers.

Then the Sky Opens Up!

The moment a tarpon eats, you feel it through your whole body. A hard, fast run you think you are going to run out of line and then the fish comes up, leaping, shaking its head to throw the hook. Bow to the jumps, keep the tension, and outlast one of the strongest fish in the ocean!

The Bucket-List Fight

Minutes From the Dock

The tarpon grounds are right around Marathon — bridges, channels, and flats just minutes out. More time with a line in the water, less time riding.

A Fight You Can See

Tarpon fight on the surface — every jump, every head shake, every tail-walk happens right in front of you. There’s nothing else like it in fishing.

Catch & Release Done Right

Nearly every tarpon is released to keep the fishery strong. We keep fish in the water, get your photo boatside, and send them back healthy.
