Mackerel and mahi-mahi have been two of the dominant species in the Middle Florida Keys this week.
Some big king mackerel have been hitting the charter boat docks in Marathon, while quality mahi have been reported up and down the Florida Keys island chain. With strong action both offshore and around the reefs, December is shaping up to be a great time to fish in Marathon.
Offshore Mahi Fishing in the Middle Florida Keys
The best place to find dolphin fish—better known as mahi-mahi—has been in the offshore blue water near the Gulf Stream current line.
Recently, the current edge has been sitting in approximately 630 feet of water, putting it roughly 12 to 13 miles offshore from Marathon. However, Gulf Stream conditions can change significantly overnight, so be sure to check your preferred satellite service for the latest current and water-temperature information before heading out.
Once you reach the blue water, look for signs that may be holding fish, including:
- Floating debris
- Diving or circling birds
- Weed lines
- Visible color changes
- Current edges
These are all high-percentage areas to search when targeting mahi in the Florida Keys.
Strong Mackerel and Snapper Fishing
King, Spanish, and cero mackerel have been showing up in good numbers on the inside patch reefs and throughout Hawk Channel off the Middle Keys.
Combine the active mackerel bite with the excellent snapper fishing we have experienced lately, and you have the ingredients for a fantastic day of Florida Keys reef fishing.
The variety of species makes this a great option for anglers who want steady action without traveling far offshore.
Sharks Are Showing Up in the Chum Slicks
Plenty of large predator sharks have also been appearing in the chum slicks.
The species most likely to make an appearance include:
- Bull sharks
- Lemon sharks
- Blacktip sharks
These powerful fish can quickly add excitement to a reef-fishing trip, especially when they move in to investigate the activity around the boat.
Sailfish, Wahoo, and Blackfin Tuna Along the Reef Edge
As the water continues to cool, migratory fish are moving into the Marathon area.
Sailfish, wahoo, and blackfin tuna have all been frequently showing up on anglers’ bent rods along the deep reef edge. Most of this action has been taking place in approximately 100 to 200 feet of water.
This is one of the most exciting times of the year to fish the Florida Keys. Cooler water can bring a wide range of fast-moving pelagic species within a relatively short run of Marathon.
