After a week of strong 20- to 30-mph winds, conditions finally settled down enough over the weekend for boats to get back offshore—and the mahi fishing did not disappoint!
Good catches of mahi-mahi were reported throughout the Middle Florida Keys, with plenty of quality fish making their way back to the docks in Marathon.
Big Mahi Showing Up Offshore
Mahi fishing has been heating up, with some impressive fish being caught offshore.
During the recent Marathon Bull and Cow offshore tournament, several quality mahi weighing up to approximately 40 pounds were brought in. Plenty of slammer-sized fish have also been hitting the docks, showing that some larger mahi are moving through the area.
With calmer conditions, anglers have been able to spend more time offshore searching for weed lines, floating debris, birds, and other signs of feeding mahi.
Tarpon Fishing Remains Excellent
Tarpon fishing continues to produce excellent action around several well-known Middle Keys locations.
Productive areas have included:
- Bahia Honda Bridge
- Seven Mile Bridge
- Long Key Bridge
These bridges attract bait and provide ideal areas for tarpon to feed, making them some of the best places to target these powerful fish during the season.
Grouper Fishing Is Producing Nice Fish
At the time of this fishing report, the Florida Keys grouper season had just opened, and the action started strong.
Nice black grouper and red grouper were coming in from the reefs, along with some large yellowtail snapper.
That combination makes reef fishing a great option for anglers looking for variety and steady action closer to Marathon.
Plenty of Fishing Options Around Marathon
Between the improving mahi bite offshore, strong tarpon fishing around the bridges, and grouper and snapper action on the reefs, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a productive day of fishing in the Middle Florida Keys.
