Offshore fishing was productive today, with some nice mahi-mahi and blackfin tuna caught approximately 16 to 25 miles south of Marathon.
Several boats found good action in the blue water, including some impressive mahi mixed in with schools of tuna.
Frigate Birds Helping Anglers Find the Fish
Frigate birds were actively working over schools of blackfin tuna, giving anglers a great visual clue to where the action was happening.
When fishing offshore in the Florida Keys, bird activity can be one of the best signs of feeding fish below the surface. Keeping an eye on frigate birds can lead you directly to tuna, mahi, and other pelagic species.
Big Mahi in the Mix
Along with the blackfin tuna, some rather large mahi were caught by several boats today.
With quality mahi and tuna both showing up offshore, this is a great time to head into the blue water and see what is moving through the Middle Florida Keys.
Offshore Fishing Action Near Marathon
The offshore bite can change quickly depending on current, water temperature, bait, and Gulf Stream position, but today’s action showed plenty of promise.
If the conditions stay favorable, anglers fishing south of Marathon should continue to have opportunities for both mahi-mahi and blackfin tuna.
